“Affiliation” with a UK university can refer to a university’s membership in an academic group like the Russell Group or the Association of Commonwealth Universities, its status as a constituent college of a larger university like the University of London, or a formal agreement with another institution. It can also refer to students on a short-term study program, such as exchange or study abroad, at a university like University College London (UCL).

Affiliation as institutional membership

  • Russell Group: A self-selected association of 24 public research universities in the UK.
  • Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU): A global network of universities with a shared commitment to international collaboration.
  • Universities UK: An association representing UK universities.
  • League of European Research Universities: A European network of leading research universities.
  • Una Europa: An alliance of European research universities.

Affiliation as a constituent college or school

  • University of London: A federal university with many constituent colleges that are also independent institutions, such as the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
  • Queen Mary University of London: A member of the University of London.
  • Affiliation as a formal, collaborative agreement
  • Affiliated school: An institution with a formal collaborative agreement with another, usually larger, institution. It may have some level of control or influence over the affiliated institution.
  • Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA): Safeguards standards and improves the quality of UK higher education.

Affiliation for students

  • Affiliate students: Students who are not enrolled in a degree program but come to a university for a short period, like through an exchange or study abroad program.
  • Top-up degree: A one-year program that allows students to “top-up” a qualification like an HND to a full undergraduate degree.
